“Ambedkar drafted constitution to fight Manusmriti”: Prakash Raj

Actor Prakash Raj has drawn criticism over remarks made at a Kerala government event, where he said that Dr. B. R. Ambedkar framed the Indian Constitution to eliminate caste-based discrimination rooted in the Manusmriti and the ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, rather than merely to secure freedom from British rule.
Addressing the gathering, Prakash Raj said the Constitution was designed to guarantee equality, justice and equal opportunity for all citizens. He argued that caste discrimination and social inequality had long harmed Indian society, and said Ambedkar’s vision was to build a more inclusive and democratic nation.
His remarks triggered strong reactions across political circles and social media. Critics accused the actor of making politically motivated statements and unfairly targeting the RSS, while supporters defended his comments, saying they echoed Ambedkar’s long-standing criticism of caste hierarchy and social exclusion.
Prakash Raj, known for his outspoken views on secularism and social justice, also said at the event that India must remain committed to constitutional values and equality. He asserted that the country should not be defined as a “Hindi Rashtra” or a “Hindu Rashtra,” but as a nation that respects diversity and protects the rights of people regardless of language, religion or background.
