Bulldozers clear illegal encroachments at Kolkata’s New Market

Authorities launched a late-night operation in New Market following the elections, clearing illegal shops and encroachments from the area. Civic officials, along with police, used heavy machinery to remove unauthorized stalls and free up pavements, aiming to improve pedestrian movement in one of the city’s busiest commercial hubs.
Officials said many of the structures had been built without permission and were obstructing public pathways, violating municipal regulations. Bulldozers were deployed to demolish these makeshift shops and clear debris, while police personnel ensured the drive proceeded without disruption.
The action is part of a broader initiative to improve urban conditions and restore order in public spaces. Authorities stated that multiple warnings had been issued to those operating illegal stalls, but non-compliance led to the enforcement drive.
While the administration maintains that the move was necessary to keep the city orderly and accessible, several affected vendors expressed distress, claiming they were given little time to relocate or secure alternative livelihoods.
Known for its heritage and bustling marketplace, New Market has long struggled with overcrowding and unauthorized extensions. Officials have indicated that similar drives may be carried out in other parts of the city as part of ongoing efforts to streamline urban infrastructure and enhance public convenience.
