PM Modi to announce BBL 2026-27 opener in Chennai

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to announce that the opening match of the 2026–27 Big Bash League (BBL) season will be staged at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium during his visit to Sydney from July 8 to 10. If confirmed, the move would mark a historic milestone for the tournament, as the BBL has never previously hosted a match outside Australia.
The season opener is likely to be held in December 2026 following discussions involving Cricket Australia, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA). Reports suggest the proposal has received strong support from cricket administrators, with final approval and an official announcement expected during Modi’s Australia visit.
Hosting a BBL match in India would represent a significant moment for Australian domestic cricket while further strengthening sporting ties between India and Australia. Chennai has emerged as the preferred venue due to its rich cricketing culture, passionate fan base, and world-class facilities, making it an ideal location for a landmark event in franchise T20 cricket.
Should the plan receive formal approval, the 2026–27 BBL opener would become the first-ever Big Bash League match played outside Australia, marking a major step in the tournament’s global expansion ambitions and bringing one of the world’s most popular domestic T20 competitions to Indian soil.
