SC pulls up Bengal Chief Secy for attack on judicial officers
The Supreme Court of India strongly reprimanded the West Bengal Chief Secretary over the Malda incident, in which seven judicial officers were attacked in Kaliachak during an electoral roll revision exercise.
A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant expressed serious concern over the lack of administrative response, noting that senior officials were unavailable when they were needed most. The court questioned the absence of timely intervention and emphasized that ensuring the safety of judicial officers is the responsibility of the state.
The incident has raised wider concerns about administrative coordination and preparedness during sensitive operations. Highlighting lapses in accountability, the court stressed that senior officials must remain accessible and responsive during crises. Its strong observations serve as a call for greater oversight and reinforce the importance of safeguarding institutional integrity.
