Sony Revives Iconic 1979 Walkman Headphones Today

Sony launched the MDR-3R retro wired headphones, reviving its iconic 1979 Walkman-era MDR-3 design.
The new model brings nostalgia to modern tech enthusiasts with modern upgrades. Sony replaced the classic 3.5mm jack with a modern USB Type-C connector. Users can plug directly into smartphones and laptops without extra dongles or Bluetooth pairing delays.
The headphones retain the classic open-ear style and ultra-lightweight frame weighing roughly 38 grams. Re-engineered 23mm drivers power clear audio output while retaining classic sound characteristics. Interchangeable blue and orange foam earpads allow customizable retro aesthetics.
The audio cable includes an in-line remote control and built-in microphone for seamless voice calls. Sony also emphasizes sustainability by constructing 25 percent of the headphone body using recycled plastics. Packaging remains completely plastic-free.
Alongside the standard edition, Sony introduced a special Netflix Stranger Things Edition. This variant features bold red and black earpads paired with custom retro packaging.
The standard Sony MDR-3R retails at $59.99 in the United States. The Stranger Things Edition costs $79.99. Both models land in select retail stores and online platforms on November 20. Sony brings vintage 1979 charm directly to modern USB-C audio devices worldwide.
