Cong proposal is an ‘attractive trap’ to delay women’s reservation: Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said in the Lok Sabha that the Congress party’s proposal on women’s reservation is a “trap” that could delay the implementation of 33% reservation for women beyond 2026.
Speaking during a heated debate on the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, Shah urged women voters to remain cautious, alleging that the Congress plan introduced in Rahul Gandhi’s absence was designed to postpone the rollout of the reservation law.
Shah reiterated that the proposal appeared attractive on the surface but would ultimately push back the timeline for implementing women’s reservation, potentially beyond 2026.
The remarks came amid intense discussions in Parliament over linking the women’s reservation legislation with the delimitation exercise. The Opposition expressed concerns that the move could create regional disparities in representation, particularly affecting states with varying population growth patterns.
Opposition leaders also called for wider political consensus before advancing the constitutional amendment, stressing the need to ensure equitable representation across regions.
The ruling BJP, meanwhile, defended the legislation, describing it as a landmark step toward empowering women, and accused the Opposition of attempting to delay its implementation through procedural objections.
