Netanyahu and Opposition Locked in Political Standoff After Israel Election

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing an uncertain political future after exit polls suggested that his bloc and the opposition, led by former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, are locked in a close contest.
The election, the first since the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023, saw voter turnout reportedly reach around 78%. Early projections suggest Netanyahu’s Likud party has lost ground, while opposition parties have made gains. However, neither side appears to have secured the 61 seats needed to form a majority government in Israel’s 120-member parliament.
Eisenkot has called for a change in leadership, arguing that voters want a new direction for the country. Netanyahu, meanwhile, is seeking to rally right-wing and religious parties behind him to secure another term.
The Arab-led parties could also play a crucial role in determining who forms the next government. But turning that potential influence into a working coalition may prove difficult, given the political divisions between the rival camps.
With the final results still to be confirmed, Israel could be heading into weeks of coalition negotiations. Until a new government is formed, Netanyahu may continue as caretaker prime minister, leaving the country facing further political uncertainty.
