Liverpool Knock Chelsea Out of Carabao Cup in Dramatic Penalty Shootout

Liverpool edged past Chelsea 6-5 on penalties at Anfield on Wednesday night to secure their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after a tense 1-1 draw in normal time.
The fourth-round clash was decided by a dramatic shootout, with Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana missing the decisive penalty to send Liverpool through.
Chelsea took the lead in the 40th minute when Morgan Rogers converted from the spot after Ryan Gravenberch fouled Moises Caicedo inside the box. Liverpool responded just three minutes later, with Cody Gakpo scoring a penalty after Fofana handled the ball.
Neither side managed to find a winner in the second half, despite several promising opportunities. Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders produced crucial saves to deny Liverpool, while Giorgi Mamardashvili kept the visitors at bay.
The shootout proved equally nerve-racking. Both teams missed opportunities to seal victory, with Liverpool’s Kostas Tsimikas firing over and Ryan Gravenberch seeing his effort saved. Chelsea debutant Emmanuel Emegha also failed to convert.
Joe Gomez then calmly dispatched Liverpool’s decisive penalty before Fofana blazed his attempt over the crossbar.
The victory sends Liverpool into the quarter-finals, where they will face Bournemouth at Anfield. Chelsea, meanwhile, exit the competition after a closely contested encounter that ultimately turned on the smallest of margins.
